i'm reading babylon the great has fallen, god's kingdom rules, published 1963. this was studied years ago when i was about 10-12 years old.

i wanted to just read some of the beliefs from decades ago.

my wife wants to know why i'm reading this book.

Reading "older publications" published by the Watchtower is actually encouraged.

It certainly used to be Atlantis, but you will find nothing like the following in any Watchtower written in this century, the irony of this becoming old light is quite striking;
“Those who really are growing in maturity find that familiarity with basic theocratic publications is a tremendous aid ... Their zeal for knowledge may even prompt them to dig back into things that were published long before they came into the truth, expanding and deepening their understanding, and ever growing in Christian maturity. Do you dig out older publications to expand and deepen your knowledge … Have you really studied these earlier publications? ... How is your background of knowledge? ... Studying them is not a chore, but a pleasure when your interest is not in the number of pages you are to read, but rather in the knowledge that you will get, ... Never think: “Oh, I know most of that.” For you will find, indeed, that you do not … And once you have completed your study of them you can then look to even older publications. ... studying earlier publications and digging back through previous issues of The Watchtower ... The Presiding Overseer of my congregation chaired the process of appointing the very first body of elders in our congregation back in 1972/73. Six were announced, including the PO, but at the very next meeting it was announced that the PO had declined the role and needed a rest after being the PO for about a decade, which must have made him one of the very first people to decline such a role. He then spent several years as a regular dub before getting back into the saddle. I think he went straight up to being an elder without passing MS, and later became a CO. After that I lost track as I lost contact with them all.

However Boogerman, I acknowledge that you have a point that has nothing to do with conspiracy theorists. In all wars there are casualties, and you are perfectly right to question where those casualties should be. There is an argument for simply allowing this pandemic to run its course and accept millions of deaths, most of which would be the elderly, who are non-productive anyway, and those with an underlying health condition, who are more likely to die sooner rather than later, so no big deal. We must also add the many thousands of front line medics and carers, and accept the heavier toll this virus would take on our black and ethnic minority groups. You are free to argue that all those casualties are an acceptable price for keeping our economies intact, but you are doing more than that. You are saying that those of us who don’t accept that price are being fooled.

I’m quite happy to come back next year to debate who advocated the best strategy.

Not just an Oriental trait though is it? – how many times have you heard someone say, “everything happens for a reason”? Although I’ve yet to hear an explanation as to what that actually means.

It’s similar to the view taken by believers in prayer - “God answers all prayers, it’s just that sometimes the answer is no”. You cannot argue logically with such people - heads God wins, tails you lose.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year.

Yep, and that’s without any preventative measures apart from some countries vaccinating their over 60s. With all the social distancing measures being taken around the world Covid-19 has still killed at least 338,000, and that is a massive underestimate. The actual deaths from Covid-19 are not being reported correctly, either because of inadequate reporting systems or lying governments. In England we only used to report deaths in hospitals, but when deaths in care homes were included the numbers shot up, but even that doesn’t tell the whole story. The UK’s official death toll is 36,667, but that’s only those who had a positive test. If you include those that had Cocid-19 symptoms as a contributing factor on their death certificate that number jumps to 41,020. However, if you take the average deaths over this period we have 54,437 more deaths than we have had during this period in previous years. If that is typical of other countries then that 338,000 figure jumps to over half a million. And as so many governments are simply lying I suspect the real figure is even higher. For example, Qatar admits to over 40,000 cases, but admits to only 19 deaths, I find that highly suspicious, as I do Russia’s claim to have lost only 3,300 or so out of over 326,00 cases.

I'm with you there oppostate and Cofty - I find it astonishing how some will see a conspiracy in just about everything. So the virus is fake is it? And all those coffins are empty? All those mourners are actors? The friend I’ve know since schooldays didn’t spend a week in intensive care and die? His funeral was a hoax and when it’s over we’ll meet up again eh? Laughable and gullible is putting it politely.
